The five-part video sculpture WE HAVE A BODY is presented in 4K, looping on five 65-inch monitors suspended in a circle in the Heizhaus at Uferstudios.
Together with five performers, visual artist Yvon Chabrowski restages postures and movement patterns she collected by observing public spaces and images in the media. In the performance, concretely recognizable poses intertwine with new abstract moments. Recapitulating the traditional roles of “female” and “male” and stripping them of their essential significance, Chabrowski creates a performative space for thought and action.
WE HAVE A BODY was developed in reference to and in appreciation of Marianne Wex’s work Let’s Take Back Our Space: Female and Male Body Language as the Result of Patriarchal Structures from the 1970’s, which has since been considered a pioneering work of feminist art.
YVON CHABROWSKI, born in East-Berlin, studied photography with Timm Rautert und Florian Ebner at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig and the École nationale supérieur des beaux-arts Lyon. She graduated from Peter Piller’s master class. Her work has been shown in numerous international exhibitions, among them at the EIGEN & ART Lab (2009 und 2014), at the 4th Moscow International Biennale for young Art (2014) and Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein (2016). In 2017 among other international exhibitions she took part in the
5th Odessa Biennale „Turbulence“ and „Between Post-truths and Events“, Frestas Trienal, São Paulo. This year, her work has been presented at the exhibitions in WHAT PARADISE? COLLECTION FLORIAN PETERS-MESSERS at Weserburg, Museum of Modern Art, Bremen. 2019 she received a residence scholarship from the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock and for the year 2020 from the Villa Serpentara, awarded by the Junge Akademie der Künste Berlin and Villa Massimo.
Her work deals with the visual formulas of contemporary media, which she decontextualizes, making them tangible by creating a reflexive distance. Her works thus create awareness for the grammar and independent existence of omnipresent media images.
