An unexpected encounter is like a little shock. Reality and time perception are momentarily suspended as they are when one feels one is in danger. For an instant the senses are extremely alert and focussed on trying to fathom the unknown counterpart. Each tiny movement draws circles and permeates the space. The moment of encounter leaves behind it an acute fissure in perception, an empty space in which, for a short moment, everything seems possible.
In Where I am and where I translate myself into, Christina Ciupke lets us into her current research on the fascination and intensity of unexpected encounters. It is a survey of the possibilities and conditions that potentially lie hidden in the gaps between habit, expectation and surprise.
