Perel will examine the theme of diagnosis in the nearly 20 years of their performance-based practice. Thinking through Jacques Derrida’s theories on radical hospitality, Perel will view the arena of performance, of action and spectatorship, as a temporal form of home, where the host and the guest inevitably exchange roles, and by necessity, are changed by the other. Reading this theoretical proposition through the perspective of disability and queerness, the artist will overturn dominant narratives of normativity, challenging existing power structures. Through literal and metaphorical readings of parasitism, Perel will further deconstruct Derrida’s concept of ‘the stranger’ to propose a theory of vulnerability as contagion. What does the precarity of the disabled, queer subject effect in the otherwise average audience? Is the vulnerability of such a subject one which is desired or revulsed? Who desires to be touched by it and who is afraid of being contaminated? How does one account for such irrevocable effects? Perhaps it is not contamination after all, but is instead, an illusion of a center, of a fixed sense of self? And further, what if the truth of flux is in fact more stable than that of the forever recognizable self? These are questions posed by the artist, who is a ‘survivor’ - of abuse, assault, violence, discrimination, medicalization, and the arts industry, as one who knows that the key to survival is to be changed by that which feels like an impossibility, and to flourish against the odds as an impossible subject.

The lecture series in English is open to all and free of entrance.
It is curated by Prof. Dr. Sandra Noeth and co-hosted by the MA SODA-students Kuba Borkowicz, Bernardo Chatillon, Jason Corff, Jorge De Hoyos, Ana Lessing Menjibar, Minna Partanen and Rhyannon Wagg.
