"Since 2016, I have been developing a series of work based on my body’s relationship to the sea. These works collectively resonate from an experience of my maternal grandmother whereby she was forced to cross a sea, fleeing from a Japanese invasion of her birth home in Guangzhou to Singapore. Following her passing in 2018, I began to shift my choreographic position from one of dancing to being danced. In residency at Tanzfabrik Berlin, my artistic research has focused on orality and embodied knowledge in maritime Southeast Asian cultures. In "harbor", I articulate the fundamental relationship between performance and ritual through a watery, autobiographical lens. This is a first, open-studio presentation of "harbor" in the frame of Tanzfabrik Berlin’s R.E.D. program."
Concept, choreography, performance : Jee Chan | In performance with : Seow Mok Jee | Sound, performance : Hilà Lahav | Video, scenography : Stefan Pente | Technical direction: Martin Pilz.

Jee Chan is an artist, dancer and choreographer whose practices make visible what is always already there (big and true, just beneath the surface). Paying attention to how histories settle and sediment in the body, they navigate questions surrounding the displaced body and what it can perform. In regarding choreography as an expanded formal proposition, their work has manifested across a diverse range of media including performance, video, installation, text and photography.
