Description

“And the young Fisherman said to himself: ‘How strange a thing this is! The Priest telleth me that the soul is worth all the gold in the world, and the merchants say that it is not worth a clipped piece of silver.’ And he passed out of the market-place, and went down to the shore of the sea, and began to ponder on what he should do.”
“The Fisherman and his Soul,” Oscar Wilde, 1831

How do we define the “non-reproducible magical soul,” the aura, the prehistoric part within every individual, and the meaning of love in this modern, digitalized and globalized society? Through dance, video and music, this piece explores three imaginary spaces corresponding to the various planes of our identity and explores human relationships in the cold, technical world. What comprises the human spirit; what animates it? How quickly can those things we hold to be essential lose their importance? And how we can build an identity in the tension between the digital and analogue world?

With ONDA, the German-Chinese choreographer and current Luxemburg resident Hannah Ma is invited to a guest performance in which dancers from Japan, Korea, Brasil, Italy, Germany, and Luxemburg make the stage ripple with waves.

Hannah Ma is a German-Chinese choreographer hailing from Berchtesgaden, Bavaria. She was educated at the Conservatory in Vienna, the John-Cranko School, Stuttgart, the University of Hagen (GER) and as a scholarship student at Kirov Ballet/St. Petersburg and the Hong Kong Ballet.
She has worked with Theatre Freiburg (GER), Museumsquartier (A), Theatre Trier (GER), and the Expo in Shanghai (CHN) amongst others.
For Hannah Ma, the body is both witness to and site of political changes that result from migration as well as the search for identity and belonging. Her interest lies within non-verbal communication and in finding ways to overcome social and cultural habits as well as prejudice concerning all that is ‘foreign and alien.’
Her focus lies on contemporary rituals and the translation of the archaic roots of humanity with all its diverse cultural traditions to our modern times. She confronts eurocentrism, (post-)colonialism, racism, sexism with an eye to bringing diversity into the mainstream, empowering women, and challenging gender-based discrimination.
In her work, she relies on techniques like collective consciousness in which she draws from her education as a spiritual healer, yogi, and hospice helper as well as her classical ballet training with the Stuttgart Ballet.
Hannah has won several awards as a dancer and choreographer such as the Theatermaske from the Richard-Wagner association (DE) and the Brückenpreis Rhineland-Palatinate (DE). She was nominated for the German Engagementpreis in 2016 and actually for the ARTE LAGUNA PRIZE VENICE 20/21. Her work H.E.R.O.E.S was evaluated and published by the German UNESCO Commission and the Bertelsmann Foundation in “Kunst in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft - Beiträge der Künste für ein Leben in Vielfalt.”
