Working Class Dance Group gathers an assembly of people who have a poverty or working class background.
Three dancers attempt to understand their shared experiences as symptoms of classist discrimination. They try to perceive how class-based oppression can manifest in the body, and more specifically, in the dancing body.
By referring to historical female-proletarian perspectives and dances, they relate their personal trajectories to stereotypes and figures such as the welfare queen (women accused of welfare fraud) and the petroleuses (proletarian women accused of arson). The dancers reckon with their own entanglements of class, gender, race and migration and how their work can establish solidarity and subversion as a tool for thriving in capitalist frameworks.
Together, the WCDG seek empowerment in collecting knowledge and crediting the achievements of past and current activist groups such as: the Prololesben, the Arbeiter*innentöchter and many more. Through sharing memories, political complicity and various dance-techniques WCDG is an attempt to consolidate desires in overthrowing a classist society.
Working Class Dance Group aims to establish a network for anyone affected by classism and its intersections in order to dissect relations of the body, dance practices and physical effects of poverty and class structures.
