Description

As an identity-forming cultural asset, the knowledge of how to prepare food into meals has been passed on and developed from generation to generation. Food is an existential component of all social relationships. This also applies to asymmetrical power relations. Since the beginning of agriculture, food systems, food and food practices have constantly evolved, with each change bringing new challenges as well as complexity. This is also evident in asymmetrical power relations of food under colonialism and deep-seated postcolonial structures of food practices and food. It is easy to forget that supposedly indigenous foods, such as potatoes, corn, peppers and other plants, or seemingly always-available spices, such as pepper and sugar, have a bloody history marked by exploitation, racism and colonialism, the effects of which are still expressed today in geopolitical power asymmetries. In a white-dominated society, where a white majority holds the interpretive sovereignty over good and not good food, food is often associated with pain for BiPOC.

The exhibition Kein Schlaraffenland (No Land of Cockaigne) focuses on these contexts in a critical postcolonial view on the topic of food. At the same time, the exhibition also represents a social gathering, food as togetherness, in which the coming together of BIPoC food cultures is celebrated and thematised.

The word Schlaraffenland comes from the Middle High German word sluraff, meaning lazy person. It often describes a faraway, utopian place where food, nourishment and meals are abundant. At the same time, the word, which can literally be translated as The Land of the Lazy Monkeys, also reflects a Western colonial as well as misanthropic view of foreign countries and cultures that are to be subjugated and exploited for their "exotic" and precious goods without any regard for humans or nature.
