On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the theater workshop Kuringa, the festival "Aesthetics of Solidarity" shows international productions according to the method of the Brazilian director, theater author and theorist Augusto Boal and his Theater of the Oppressed.
In order to understand that a social problem is related to my reality, I have to perceive it in my life. Bárbara Santos
The Theater of the Oppressed questions society about current issues and uses concrete example situations to look for ways to change reality for the better. To this end, it opens up a creative space of play and dialogue, thus combining theatrical aesthetics with social and political activism and the power of concrete agency.
This year's festival "Ästhetik der Solidarität - Aesthetics of Solidarity" is about the question of what solidarity could mean after the time of the pandemic we have just experienced. The pandemic has alienated people from each other and affected everyone's lives in very different ways. The festival opens an interactive space to negotiate the meaning of solidarity and encourage dialogue away from the growing polarization of perspectives. Art becomes activism and dialogue.
The festival Ästhetik der Solidarität - Aesthetics of Solidarity is a production of KURINGA - Raum für Theater der Unterdrückten in Berlin and is funded by the Bezirkskulturfonds Mitte, with the kind support of Uferstudios.
The theater workshop Kuringa - Space for Theater of the Oppressed in Berlin was founded in 2011 in Berlin-Wedding and has become a place for qualification in theater of the oppressed, for rehearsals and public performances of forum theater groups as well as for other events on theater and aesthetics of the oppressed. Kuringa is rooted in the neighborhood of the Wedding district and at the same time part of international networks such as the European network TOgether, the global feminist Ma(g)dalena International Network and the Latin American network ReLATO. KURINGA was founded by Bárbara Santos (artistic director), who coordinated Augusto Boal's theater center in Rio de Janeiro for more than two decades, and by Christoph Leucht and Till Baumann, both of whom have been working with Boal's theater approaches in Germany since the 1990s.
